North Carolina Spot Festival

Hampstead, N.C. holds the annual Spot Festival each September. This year is the 45th festival and is being held this week end, September 27th and 28th. The festival location is on Highway 17 on the southbound side, about a quarter mile south of the intersection with 210 west. Plenty of Spot dinners, and also featured will be musical performances, arts and crafts, food vendors, and did we mention Spots? For more information, visit the website at http://www.nc-spotfestival.com. BTW, Spots? It is a fish!

Surf City and Topsail Island

The new Surf City Visitors Center on Topsail Island opened yesterday. Located on the ocean front, the structure was moved from its former location in Camp Davis in the early 1950's. A picturesque spot, with the Surf City pier as a backdrop, the site was home to Cindy's Oceanside Restaurant until August 2007. A total renovation of the building makes available meeting space for small groups, as well as a wonderful venue for weddings, receptions, baby showers, and other community events. The SC Visitors Center will also provide a central location on the island for tourists to stop in, chat with locals and learn about all there is to do and see do on Topsail Island. Flanked by Daddy Mac's Restaurant and Buddy's, and across the street from Bank of America (the only bank on the island) the center is centrally located at the intersection of Roland Avenue and North Shore Drive and is within walking distance to the island's shopping and restaurant district. The center will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Rocking and rolling (with the nor'easter) on Topsail Island!

Considering the fact that Hurricane Hanna was touted as such a big deal a couple of weeks ago, this nor'easter was more damaging (to the beach). As the storm came ashore on astronomically high tides, the intracoastal waterway (normally a quarter mile from our back garden) rose to spill into the sound and then into our marsh. Amazing! We walked out to the beach yesterday, just at high tide and we were stunned to see the huge waves. There was a great deal of debris in the water, from stairs and sand fencing, so there is going to be a bit of cleanup over the next few weeks. High tide this a.m. was still being pushed by the storm but this effect will subside as we move through the day. We will be out this afternoon taking a look at our oceanfront dune line and will post back later or tomorrow about our observations. We always keep in mind that Mother Nature giveth and Mother Nature taketh away, particularly when you live on an island!

Farmer's Markets and Topsail Island

The Popcorn Cake Lady

Pictured above is one of our favorite places to stop at the Famer's Market held in Poplar Grove each Wednesday. Mary Wootten (the owner and chief cake designer) has one of the most original ideas, combining popcorn, peanuts and chocolate candies to make delicious "cakes". Also in the market are pickles, vegetables, plants, peanuts, grapes, orchids, wines, candles, handcrafted jewelry, breads and cookies and the most fabulous fresh cut flowers. Visit Mary's new website at www.poppincakes.com and tell 'em we sent you!

If you would like to know about some of the other events being held in our area over the next month, take a look at our newsletter, "Living on Topsail Time." Here's the online link http://www.box.net/shared/yy78ettcqf

Topsail Island, Poplar Grove and the Farmer's Market

Poplar Grove

Every Wednesday, starting in the Spring and continuing through December, Poplar Grove Plantation is the site of the Farmer's Market. One of the vendors is Colleen Bannerman representing Bannerman Vineyard, the only vineyard located in Pender County. Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of speaking with Colleen AND buying some of her vineyard's muscadine grapes. Awesome! Bannerman Vineyard supplied the grapes used to make many of the Duplin County wines for years and now she and Scot make a number of muscadine based wines. We spoke with our team members when we returned to the office and all have agreed that making a trip to Bannerman Vineyard would be a great way to spend the afternoon. On September 27, the North Carolina Muscadine Festival will be held in the Duplin County Events Center in Kenansville. There will be more than 20 North Carolina wineries represented, all celebrating North Carolina's state fruit. Visit the website for all the details! www.muscadineharvestfestival.com.

We're happy Hanna wasn't hard hearted on Topsail Island!

We've been to the office and Kathy put everything back to normal. (Well, what constitutes normal for our group), All the computers are back online, although Kathy's having a small glitch with one of our older desktops. Judy was in the office this morning and Bob was taking over this afternoon for floor duty.

We drove the island and checked on our client's houses and everyone seems to have come out of the storm relatively unscathed. We do have some shingle issues to take care of, but again, whew!!!

We drove over to Sunrise Watch (where Barnacle Bill's used to be - boy, can you spot a long time Topsail Island fan when they mention Barnacle Bill's), took a few photos and will post them here. Really, the beach is fine and taking into account that the photos were taken midway between high and low tide with high surf, it looks pretty good.

If anyone reading would like to see our newsletter, Living on Topsail Time, the current online issue for September is available at http://www.box.net/shared/yy78ettcqf.

Looking out to Barnacle Bill's

Topsail Island and TS Hanna

All over and done with, for the most part. wind gusts of maybe 65 - 70. No high sustained. The power was on the entire time, we didn't lose cable and Kathy stayed nice and cool 'cause the AC stayed up. YAY! The dogs were a little jumpy most of the night, especially the younger of the two Bichons, Pearl. Evidently it became her assignment to make certain her family was aware of all those leaves blowing by the windows. Still a bit blustery on the island but the sun is coming out and folks are out on the beach. We will take a drive up and down the 27 miles of the island at some point today and check all of our current listings and those homes of our past clients who do not live here. As the storm affected the south facing beaches, we do not expect that there will have been much in the way of erosion. That's another part of living on the island that you have to be aware of during a storm... the ocean giveth and the ocean taketh away. Safe for another day!

Tropical Storm Hanna

I wrote yesterday about the vagaries of hurricanes and this one is no different. The course changed throughout the day and now the storm is making landfall south of us. Actually, this is not a good thing, as the northeast quadrant of a tropical storm or hurricane is the most dangerous, as it has more tornadic activity. We are under a tornado watch now here on Topsail Island. Lots of wind and rain are expected. I have cleared our decks and balconies of anything that could become a missile or a cannonball, as Kathy says. Looking forward to walking the beach tomorrow, always find some interesting things.

Topsail Island and Hanna

Well, apparently landfall by Hanna is going to be right here on Topsail Island in Pender County. We spent the day gathering our signs, moving deck chairs and furniture off balconies and porches and rolling down storm shutters for some of our clients. Many of our homeowners do not live on Topsail and getting here to take care of their property is impossible from a distance standpoint. We do not expect Hanna to be much of a challenge, more on the order of a typical nor'easter but we never underestimate dear old Mother Nature, either. We have a healthy respect for the vagaries of hurricanes. Hanna will be moving fast and will be out of here by noon on Saturday.
